Grand Canyon to Tehachapi.

We left the Grand Canyon early this morning knowing we had a long drive ahead of us. It's the first day that the weather has looked unsettled with a few spots of rain as we left.
We decided to drive along another section of Route 66 that would take us through Oatman as it looked an intriguing place to take a break.

It wasn't all blue skies today.

Route 66 from Kingman to Oatman was a fun drive on a twisty mountain road. Almost felt like being in the Lake District as the rain started to fall.

Oatman turned out to be a great place for a break. Wild Burros (donkeys) wandered up and down the Main Street and the town had a wonderful setting in the hills.

We then rejoined the Interstate. With only 15 miles left to drive out of the 450 miles we expected to cover today we came across road closed signs due to a mud slide. With helpful directions from a Deputy Sherrif we made a 20 mile detour but then began to panic when the low fuel light came on.
We made it to Tehachapi an hour later than we would have liked after covering 470 miles. We filled  the car up with 11 gallons of petrol for just over $30 (£20) followed by a Mexican and a cool beer for us.

  1. I was thinking you must be missing work by now, but you've found yourself being surrounded by donkeys anyway.

    Oatman looks charmingly traditional.

    1. Oatman was a fun place to stop. Twice a day they had gunfights but we arrived between the two 'show times'.
      Like the donkey comment :-)
