Hoover Dam and Route 66

We checked out of our Las Vegas hotel this morning then had a short 45 minutes drive to the Hoover Dam. After driving across the dam from the Nevada site to the Arizona side then back again (only because I missed the turning to the car park) we then joined a Power Plant tour. After a very interesting film about the construction of the dam we then took an elevator 500 feet down inside the dam followed by a visit the generator room. I found it all very interesting but Hazel did not share my enthusiasm about the dam.

This view is looking down the face of the dam with the Power Plants at either side of the Colorado river. The bridge is for the Hoover Dam bypass and until it was built in 2010 all traffic on US 93 had to travel over the dam. I did't realize at the time that you can walk over the bride which would give a great vantage point over the dam.

Next stop was Kingman on Historic Route 66, we had a quick look round the small Route 66 museum before continuing East along Route 66 rather than taking the more direct Interstate 40.

Loved the views and travelling along Route 66 gave us the opportunity to pull over and take photo's along the way.

Hackberry Store. Interesting place to take a break with a small shop and Route 66 memorabilia.

After travelling along 90 miles of Route 66 it was time to rejoin the Interstate at Seligman.
