Alcatraz

Up and out early today for our trip across to Alcatraz.
Walked past the bottom of Lombard Street to take a photo as promised yesterday. Photo doesn't really show the hairpins very clearly.

Caught the busy ferry to Alcatraz. Alcatraz receives 1 million visitors a year.

Cell Block A, the least secure.

Typical cell in Block B. Compact!

To past time prisoners turned there hands to things they may have done as children. In this example the prisoner passed time crochering as hisGrandmother taught him.

Hazel waiting for a visitor.

This cell was occupied by one of three bank robbers who escaped by tunnelling through the wall using a spoon over many months. They made model heads to place in there beds fooling the guards until the guards tried to wake them the next morning. It is assume that they perished in the dangerous sea that surrounds Alcatraz but no bodies where ever found. One theory is that they escaped to South America    as they where all learning to speak Spanish.

Well behaved prisoners could work in the Prison gardens. Quite a view.

Pier 39 Sea Lions basking in the California sun.

Hazel looking forward to visiting USS Pampanito WWII US Navy Submarine.
The submarine sank 6 Japanese ships Including two carry British and Australian POW's which they later rescued.

Waking home after another busy day. One thing we've discovered during the last few days is that San Francisco is built on a lot of VERY steep hills.

  1. Yeah, I bet the hills weren't as tiring on google street view. Alcatraz looks on a par with York Travelodge. Weather still looks good, it's turned bad here.

    1. Alcatraz I found a little disapointing, probably because it's so busy. Glad we have been and the audio tour was very good, very informative. Can't believe it's October the weather hear has been amazing and no famous fog!

  2. Alcatraz cells remind me of the old Spacetrack office. Better views from the outside cabins/cells at Alcatraz but at least here the locks were on the inside.

    1. I thought the cell colour scheme was much nicer than the one in the old Spacetrack office.
