Feels a bit unfair to say that I'm writing this sat in a very comfortable rocking chair on our balcony in Death Valley and I'm far too hot. I'm assuming it's dark, cold and damp back in the UK by now.
We spent last night in June Lake a lovely little place. The locals gave the place lots of character in the bar where we had our evening meal. The next morning we had a short walk to Gull Lake, a stunning little lake where we sat and had a coffee at Gull Lake Marina.
Mono Lake. This other worldly lake rimmed by salt flats and twisted mineral towers maybe the oldest lake in North America. A new aqueduct to Los Angeles that opened in 1941 dropped water levels by more than 40ft exposing the bizarre tufa towers.
Alabama Hills where many cowboy films have been shot, Six-mile Movie Flat Road remains a favourite with film-makers.
Mount Whitney (over 14,500ft) can be seen through the Möbius Arch.
Death Valley Flat Mesquite Sand Dune, Hazel refusing to walk because it's after 10am. It's 6pm and cooled down to 101F.

Fabulous blog Julian - I'm loving it! I remember Jon insisting on trying to make us all walk up to Dante's View- this was in August - and although late afternoon the temps were well in the 40C's and really windy. The kids and I all turned back because it was like being inside a tumble dryer on high heat!
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel I'm glad your enjoying the blog. I'm so tired on an evening I nearly fall asleep writing it. Also a few cool beers at the end of a busy day doesn't help :-) We will visit Dante's View today probably mid afternoon so I'd better wear a hat while I march Hazel up there.
DeleteFantastic photos and comments Julian, keep it up! Looks as though you're having a fabulous trip. Yes it is cold and grey here!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rich. It's been great but exhausting at times. I'll certainly keep the blog going whenever I can.
